I discovered acai bowls on holiday in Portugal. I especially enjoy them on warm days: cold, fruity and topped with crunchy granola. My base is frozen acai purée, banana and strawberries, with peanut butter added at the end.

What is an acai bowl?
An acai bowl is a thick blended fruit mixture eaten with a spoon. I use frozen acai purée sold at Alnatura, with banana and strawberries for fruitiness and sweetness. Granola and peanut butter go on top.
Keep it thick and creamy
Slice the banana before freezing. Blend the fruit while still cold, starting without extra liquid. Use short bursts and switch the blender off before scraping down with a spatula. Add cold water only a splash at a time if needed; too much makes a smoothie rather than a spoonable bowl.
Can I use acai powder instead?
This recipe uses 150 g frozen purée. Powder is more concentrated and cannot replace it gram for gram. If using powder, follow the quantity on its pack and blend it with the banana and strawberries. The flavour and texture will be different.
Toppings and variations
The 30 g granola and 20 g peanut butter are part of this bowl. Extra berries, banana slices, coconut or chopped nuts are optional. Vanilla protein powder is optional too and may need a little extra liquid.

Kitchen tip
Chill the serving bowl briefly and have the toppings ready before blending, so you can serve before the mixture softens.
